Let’s plan a trip to Tokyo with me! Assignment6-E

Planning a trip is always fun.You get to decide where you stay, eat and shop.

WRONG. It’s hectic..at least for me. Especially when I have to bring my friends around Japan, they give me a lot of pressure. What if they don’t like the food? What if they get bored? Sometimes they want to experience what the average Japanese do, not the typical sightseeing. They ask me to bring them to sushi, which is stupid because you can’t handle any sashimi other than salmon – the only type of fish you’ve tried in all you-can-eat restaurants in Toronto.

It’s overwhelming. I am going back to Japan this winter and my boyfriend is visiting me for 5 days. This will be his fourth trip to Japan that I have to plan. Since he’s done with all the typical sightseeing in Tokyo, and both of us are passionate about photography and driving, this trip would be photography and road trip. So let’s plan a trip to Tokyo with me!

Made in Japan Technologies Part 1: Toilets (Assignment 5-D)

Many foreigners are fascinated by Japanese technologies when they visit Japan. One of the first thing they notice is usually the TOILET.

Why would people pay so much attention to Japanese toilets?

You wouldn’t believe it until you’ve seen it with your own eyes…or butt. Toilets in Japan do more than you expect: they maybe even be more useful than your husband.  Stick with me until the end of this post: you might consider booking a flight to Japan to check them out!

A washroom in Japan. Most toilets are made by TOTO.

Toronto Ramen…Yay or Nay?/食べ比べ(Tabekurabe)! Assignment4-D

What kind of food does it pop out to your mind when you think about Japanese food?
Shushi? Tempura? All you can eat?
Oh, edamame is hot these days in the U.S. and Europe…
What about ramen?

Ramen has been risen its popularities around the world. Toronto is not exception. This couple years, many authentic Japanese ramen places have been launching in Toronto. Among all the choices, most of foreigners, in this case Torontonians, have hard time choosing the best ramen place. I won’t blame y’all. So here I come. I will tell you which one is the absolute best and which ones you should avoid to go.

Before getting into details, I will give you some basic information about Ramen.

No F words in Japan Assignment3-E

Japanese is a popular language for new learners. Very often, the very first things they want to learn are the swear words. I myself am guilty of this. Having many international friends means fluency in French, Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Spanish swear words. It opens up an interesting conversation when meeting with foreigners.

Unfortunately, not in Japanese.

As a nation, we have way fewer swear words than say, Americans. Sorry to disappoint, but we don’t have the F word. There is list of swear words here, if you take a look you’ll soon find that the worst insult you could possibly yell to someone is

“Konoyaro (この野郎)”/You piece of S**T.

OTAKU?! Oh, Please! Assignment1-F

As soon as people find out I’m Japanese, they ALWAYS ask me the same question: “Do you watch anime?”. Let me tell you, I AM NOT AN OTAKU nor a PERVERT. I don’t watch anime and most certainly not anime porn. I know this Japanese guy who passionately talks about anime porn, and we think he’s a weirdo. Well he knows it. And yes, he’s been single for 24 years. I don’t want to offend anybody, but watching anime is not my thing (nor is it a Japanese thing). Like normal humans, we watch TV dramas and have secret crushes on our favorite actors and singers. Not anime characters.

Otaku(オタク)= The Japanese word for “geek”

The dude on the left sums up the average Japanese otaku.
